It should be noted that I wrote American Girls fan fiction when I was 8 years old, and that my Addy doll is sitting in my room as I type this. In her PINK DRESS. With the WHITE SQUIGGLES. And a SMUDGE ON HER CHEEK that I can't wash off. And PATCHES OF HAIR (strangely textured like pubic hair, I always thought) missing from where I brushed her too often. And the one eye that doesn't blink so easily these days.

It should be noted that I bought my Addy doll myself, at 9 years old, with my $82 scrimped and saved for over a year and I never had an allowance, by the way.

Finally, it should be noted that I did not mention Kit and Kaya by name in this poll because Kit and Kaya can blow me and also I forgot their names at the time.

Everyone should be exposed to the American Girls love, I think! Even more than the BSC, because the American Girls teach you while you learn.

I love you toooo.

Maybe it's cause I'm Canadian, but I don't know what "American Girl" is? Alas. I was doing so well with the BSC, too.

I think it started with Kirsten and Molly and Samantha, who were fictional characters from different periods (described oh-so-briefly above in the poll) who got their own six-book series. You had a book where they introDUCED the girl, a book about a school adventure, a book about a Christmas adventure, a book about a birthday adventure, a book about a summer adventure, and a book about I don't-know-what; someone usually died in the last book. And it was the same formula for all the girls. And it was historical fiction targeted at young girls. Then they started up with the dolls. And all their toys. And then the American Girls of today. And the clothes. And the OTHER books. And the magazine. And the TV movie. And now there are something like seven or eight American Girls, I think?

I had three! Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly. My grandma was really into dolls and also liked to spoil me. I was pretty hard on them, probably because I didn't know they cost like $125970497435 (or $82, whatever).

Kirsten was my favorite though - nice, hardy Midwestern girl.

Man, I loved those.

Have you ever been to an American Girl store? Insaaaane.

[info]lykaios

August 11 2005, 00:31:06 UTC 6 years ago

Oooh, lucky. :D One of my friends is a doll fanatic too and had those EXACT SAME DOLLS and still has them displayed like, with that little Mac you could buy for the American Girls of today. Which doesn't make any sense, cos the dolsl themselves are wearing pioneer garb and the like.

I like Kirsten on principle but her books BORED me except the one when her friend died. And when she was St. Lucia.

Never been to an American Girl store in my liiiife! Where are these crazy places located?

I loved Samantha. Really.
Her summer adventure was one of my favorite books, omg, I totally stole it from Trischa Hartsler.

I used to read the books on occasion and treasured the catalogue whenever it came but I was too poor to every buy a doll. Woe for my childhood was filled with emptiness! Like I never got an Easy Bake oven and then my aunt bought me one when I was fourteen because she felt guilty. But by then I don't want to cook cookie-sized cakes with a LIGHTBULB, DO I?

...In conclusion, doll's eyes are scary.

[info]lykaios

August 11 2005, 00:50:59 UTC 6 years ago

The crap that comes out of Easy Bake ovens is, well, crap, too. (I also wanted one but never got one. I wanted a Barbie Jeep too. And the 3-foot-tall Barbies. And the Barbies themselves, but mostly to play with their miniatures. In conclusion, I liked Barbie.)

Anyway, woe for no doll!

Sometimes I'm afraid my Addy doll is going to kill me in revenge for keeping her in a box for over a year.

August 11 2005, 01:12:51 UTC 6 years ago

Wow, this brings back memories!! I had a Samantha doll, and I don't even know where it is right now.

They have dolls named Kit and Kaya now?

[info]lykaios

August 11 2005, 01:14:38 UTC 6 years ago

Yeah, Kit is a Depression-era girl, and Kaya's an Indian girl I do believe. I can't remember from what era.

Woe, for I am too old to be of the American Girl pheonomena. I vaguely remember a girl of 2-5 that I babysat for starting to get interested in them. By the time she was five. But they were old hat by that time.

They are still around, but were also not in my classroom library, where I also garnered a lot of experience in various kid fads and follys and also worthwhile endeavors. My students were not into American Girls. Go figure. Someone might have had an Addy doll, though, now that I think about it, and book. I'm almost sure now she did.

Wow. That was long and pointless.

Omg! The magazine! There were like, crafts! And recipes! AHH. I love you for this poll. When I get back from Japan I am going to hunt down the copies I still have of the magazine and make something out of it and then post pictures. Because you are like my muse. American Girl crafts muse.

[info]lykaios

August 11 2005, 20:10:43 UTC 6 years ago

You know the BEST THING about those crafts? They once taught you how to make minis. Yeah. You could make a mini corkboard and a mini bookshelf and a mini vase with mini flowers and I thought it was the most amazing thing in the history of forever, because I love miniatures.

So glad to be the Muse.

My favorite was Samantha, of course; how could it not be? She looked like me, she had my name... the choice was obvious. I just wasn't as rich.

I think my second favorite would have to be Felicity, and then Molly. Addy was cool, too. I didn't really care for Kirsten or Josephina, though, and I agree that the new characters are totally lame.

Also. I am insane and sleep deprived.

So, [info]sabriel told me I had to friend you, and your name is familiar I think because of [info]siriusblackout but I've a shit memory so don't hold me to that.

And this post is the best post I've ever seen omg. I used to make aprons for Kirsten. And kerchiefs. Which consisted of cutting triangles and sticking them in my pocket until the edges frayed sufficiently. :D

[info]lykaios

August 12 2005, 15:31:50 UTC 6 years ago

[info]sabriel would say a ridiculous thing like that. :D Yeah, you might have seen me there, and also I think you've might've recced one or two things I wrote as [info]librae, and I might remember this because I might have run nude through the house to celebrate, as is my wont.

Unn! American Girl crafts at home, hot! I did similar things because there was no way in hell I could buy more of the AGC myself, so, thrift. Thrift!
